The smartwatch features 1.63 inch Super AMOLED display with resolution of 320 x 320. There is a pair of speakers and 2 microphones for audio, video recording and also for communicating with the caller via the in-built dialer. It works when the Gear with connected to a nearby Galaxy phone.

BATTERY LIFE IS JUST A MERE 27 HOURS UNDER NORMAL USAGE

The watch comes with Bluetooth 4.0 and has gyroscope and accelerometer sensors. The watch weighs around 73.8g and its dimensions are 36.8×56.6×11.1mm. It has a Li-ion 315mAh battery - which should last a mere 27 hours under normal usage.

The Galaxy Gear will retail for $299. The Gear will come pre-loaded with 10 different clock options and has some pre-installed apps like MyFitnessPal, Runkeeper, Glympse, Banjo, Life360, eBay ,Evernote, Zite, Atooma, EasilyDo, TripIt. There are a total of 70 third-party apps which can be installed on the gear.

The Gear organizes apps, watch faces and other pages in swappable cards. With such a screen size it’s only possible to display one at a time. To navigate through the wearable’s many cards, you can swipe with a finger.

Located on the right side is the only button the Gear has. You press it once it goes to the home screen, while pressing twice launches S Voice and when pressed three times activates the “safety assistance”. The “safety assistance” feature send your location to a selected contact incase of emergency.

The watch will notify the user for incoming messages, calls, emails and other alerts.
It also enables the user to get a preview of the messages.

AUTO LOCK WILL AUTOMATICALLY LOCK YOUR SMARTPHONE’S SCREEN IF GEAR GOES BEYOND 1.5 METERS AWAY

Memographer feature: Voice Memo lets users capture conversations or notes from their wrists and save those voice recordings into texts on their Samsung Galaxy phones. This feature enables the user to save voice notes and conversations to their Samsung Galaxy phones.

Auto Lock – this app will lock your smartphone’s screen the moment your Galaxy Gear moves beyond 1.5 meters away from the device. Once the Gear is back in the 1.5 meter radius, the smartphone will unlock again.

Find My Device helps the users to find their phone which has been misplaced, by making it to ring, illuminate and vibrate.

Users can also control music on their phones with the Galaxy Gear. Handy.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear will be shipping to 140 countries with the Galaxy Note 3 after September 25th. But US and Japan will have to wait till October to get one. Samsung has got a head start against their rival Apple’s rumoured iWatch by launching way ahead of it.

Verdict


AT $299, IT IS TOO EXPENSIVE

Priced at $299, the Galaxy Gear is too expensive a smartwatch. Even the 16 GB variant of the LG Nexus 4 costs only $249. And the battery life isn’t very impressive, specially from a watch perspective.
So it would be wise to wait and then watch the market for more products like these, with the iWatch releasing  in 2014.
